I've been using loot rank as a bible for the gear that i go after. one thing that has kind of boggled me (even though i go with it anyway) is how some of the items are ranked. for example, we were in a 25-man Naxx run and these plate defense legs dropped. i rolled and won. the following Tuesday during 10-man Naxx the T7 legs dropped and according to loot rank, the T7 legs are better than the non-T7 legs that drop out of 25-man. Naturally, everyone was freaking out. "dude you have legs from 25-man are you crazy!!" i said "well loot rank says that something in a 10-man is better than 25-man". i see a lot of examples of this where gear upgrades don't seem "logical". any insight into just how you determine what piece is better than another would be great

Loot Rank will rank data based on the weightings you give the various items. It really is as good as the data that is put into it from the users.
Most users get data from their own calculations, simulators or info that is posted in forums such as elitist jerks.
Could you post us up the stat weightings you are using and we can take a look?

Well I don't have any stat ratings of my own per se. I more or less go by exactly what loot rank has. It's been a good guide if not somewhat controversial from what I've seen on decisions like going with the 10-man Naxx T7 legs instead of the 25-man Naxx legs (not T7.5) and everyone thought I was crazy hehe

Could you post up the URL of the lootrank table that you are using where the 10 man legs are showing higher than the 25 man legs and we will have a look?

I'm not the OP, but I think he's referring to the Warrior, Protection sample template, which ranks [item]Heroes' Dreadnaught Legguards[/item] (T7 legs) slightly higher than [item]Greaves of Turbulence[/item] (25-man non-set legs).

Let me preface this by stating I do not play a Protection Warrior, or even a Warrior, or even a tank. But I DO know some things about stat-weighting.
There are some things to keep in mind when using LootRank to rank various items' values to you. For starters, the default template is almost never accurate for any class, any spec, or any set of gear. It is not customized for you or your style of play whatsoever.
"Loot Rank" the site admin was correct when he stated "[Loot Rank] is as good as the data that is put into it from the users".
Some tanks generally prefer to gear STA, claiming that it is more important to have an HP buffer (so healers can prevent you from being spiked down) than to overall take less DMG on average. Other tanks believe mitigation is more important.
The only hard "stat preferences" that I am familiar with are:
The general consensus is that hitting your DEF cap should certainly be priority #1.
Expertise is better than Hit, unless you are expertise capped.
Dodge is better than parry, because you get more %dodge from 1 dodge rating.
For your specific comparison of gear, the tier-7 pants have 2 gem sockets, which generally will make that loot rank better (as you can put whichever gems maximize your specific best stat), and they also have a set bonus (which is not accounted for by LootRank at all), and I would almost lean towards saying the tier-7 iLvl 200 pants are better than the Naxx-25 iLvl 213 pants, just as LootRank says.
In the end, the only way to have LootRank correctly rank items for YOUR character is by creating a customized weighting based on your stat preferences. This is much harder for tanks and healers, where different sets of stats can be vastly more/less important in certain situations -- for PvE DPS, you simply want more DPS, and there is usually a straightforward solution to maximizing your DPS.
I play an Enhancement Shaman, and I should point out that my personal stat weighting for PvE Enhancement DPS looks nothing like their default template. My template is customized to MY character with MY talents and MY gear. For LootRank to be truly effective, you have to do something similar and create a set of stat preferences.
Good luck,
Hungraa
