Hey Chillout,
LootRank is simply two things: a database of gear in WoW, and a calculator.
Near the top of the main page you will see many boxes, some with numbers and some with checkboxes. You use these to specify which kinds of gear you want to see, and how LootRank should assign values to each piece of gear, and then LootRank will automatically order then from highest value to lowest, by slot.
LootRank will take all the values you put in, calculate the total value for each piece of gear in each slot, and show you the gear starting with the highest total value.
Try for example weighting EVERYTHING at 0, except Stamina at 1:
http://www.lootrank.com/wr.asp?Cla=32767&Max=10&Gem=3&Str=&Sta=1&Agi=&Int=&Spi=&Ver=6
which will show you every piece of gear you should wear if ALL YOU CARED ABOUT was Stamina. This isn't a realistic scenario, though.
There are some sample class stat-weighting templates at
http://www.lootrank.com/templates.asp
In general, you will want to do some thinking or research about your own personal stat-weightings for your character / class / gear / role, and when you plug them into LootRank, it will tell you which gear best matches your preferred gear stats.
The goal is to optimize the gear your character wears to best perform whichever role you perform: Tank, DPS, or Heal.
Keep in mind that even though you might play a DPS or Healer, it doesn't necessarily mean you don't want or need Stamina. While most high level gear comes automatically with a healthy portion of stamina (and so many DPS'ers will choose to weight it with 0 points), every character needs some Stamina. The same may go for other classes, too. Mages with mana issues might choose to weigh Spirit or Mp5 more heavily.

like... how do i tell it i want to value armor pen over crit rating or agility over strength and vice versa?
You would simply put a larger number in the Armor Pen box than in the Crit rating box, and you would put a larger number in the AGI box than in the STR box. Some research goes a long way in determining accurate "Effective Attack Power" values for each class, which you could then enter into LootRank to get accurate results of which gear will more greatly increase your DPS. The forums at Elitist Jerks (

I hope this helps. Good luck!
